YES! Instead of wasting the Columbia, let’s use the water to grow food and prosperity in the West!
As a concerned United States citizen, I have a stake in managing our natural resources and making sure future generations have a safe and prosperous home. One of our greatest resources is our water, flowing through a network of rivers into the sea. The West’s supply of water can, through technology, be better managed.
As the demand for water sources in the Southwestern states grows, the Western states need to do more to ensure that water is intelligently preserved, protected and managed.
Historically, the Federal government has stepped in to broker water pacts in other states that do not always serve the best interests of all states. That is why we think the Western states must act now, to effectively and sustainably recycle a small percentage of the Columbia River’s outflow.
That is why I am today asking:
My Federal and state representatives and senators to explore ways to make the Columbia River work for us, especially with respect to its outflow into the Pacific Ocean. If a small percentage of that outflow were sold to states in other regions, that revenue could be shared by citizens and ensure future sustainability
Appropriate authorities and legislators in the Northwest water-exporting states to secure their rights to the Columbia River while ensuring their first in use, first in right status.
Federal and state representatives and senators to consider a regional compact of states to manage, protect and collectively negotiate any future water supply arrangements among states.
The Columbia River discharge into the sea is a major resource for areas that need water. We want more involvement in securing its future as well as our own.
